How should I maintain a shirasaya blade for display?

 Updated Feb 2026

Apply a thin coat of choji oil (clove oil) or refined mineral oil to the blade surface every four to six weeks to prevent oxidation. Use a soft microfiber cloth or traditional nuguigami paper to wipe the blade, always moving from spine toward edge in a single direction. Store the sword horizontally in a climate-controlled room with stable humidity between 40 and 55 percent; excessive moisture accelerates rust on carbon steel, while overly dry air can cause the wooden shirasaya mounting to crack or shrink. If you display the piece on an open rack, avoid direct sunlight, which may fade the wood's finish and warm the steel surface unevenly.
