Why is Sasuke's sword a straight chokutō instead of a curved katana?

 Updated Feb 2026

Sasuke Uchiha carries a chokutō, which is a pre-cursor to the katana that originated before curved-blade forging techniques became standard in feudal Japan. In the anime, this design choice visually separates Sasuke from other characters who wield traditional katana, reflecting his unconventional path and his training under Orochimaru. A chokutō features a straight, single-edged blade without the distinctive sori (curvature) of a katana, and it typically has a simpler tsuba and a more utilitarian profile. Our replicas preserve this straight geometry faithfully, using 1045 carbon steel shaped without any curvature so the silhouette matches what appears on screen.
