What steel types are used in traditional naginata replicas?

 Updated Feb 2026

This collection features three primary steels. T10 high-carbon steel is clay tempered to create a real hamon — the visible temper line formed when the spine is coated with clay before quenching, leaving the edge harder than the back. Damascus pattern steel is produced by folding and forge-welding multiple layers, resulting in distinctive wavy grain lines that are unique to each blade. Manganese steel provides a more corrosion-resistant option that holds a clean polish with minimal upkeep. All three are full-tang, meaning the steel extends uninterrupted through the handle, which is critical for the structural balance of a polearm-length collectible.
