How should I care for a carbon steel collectible katana at home?

 Updated Mar 2026

Carbon steel katanas require more attentive maintenance than stainless steel pieces because they are susceptible to surface oxidation when exposed to moisture or fingerprints. For home display, apply a thin coat of choji oil (a traditional Japanese blade oil) or mineral oil along the entire blade surface every few months using a soft cloth. Always handle the blade with clean cotton gloves to prevent skin oils from contacting the steel. Store the katana horizontally on a display stand in a low-humidity environment - avoid placing it near windows where temperature fluctuations can cause condensation. With proper care, a well-forged carbon steel display piece will retain its appearance for decades.
