What is the difference between an odachi and a long katana?

 Updated Feb 2026

An odachi (also called nodachi) is a historically distinct sword type — a battlefield weapon with a blade typically over 90 cm, designed for sweeping cuts against cavalry. A long katana is an extended version of the standard katana, maintaining the familiar katana blade geometry and curvature but with additional length. Both are represented in this collection. The main visual difference is in the fittings and proportions: odachi tend to have larger tsuba and thicker handles to match their blade dimensions.
