How does 1045 carbon steel compare to higher-carbon options like T10?

 Updated Mar 2026

1045 carbon steel contains roughly 0.45% carbon, which places it in the medium-carbon range. This makes it straightforward to forge, shape, and heat-treat consistently — qualities that matter in hand-forged production. T10 steel, by contrast, sits at approximately 1.0% carbon and benefits from added tungsten, giving it greater hardness and the potential for a finer edge retention. The trade-off is that higher-carbon steels are more brittle under lateral stress. For display-focused collectors, 1045 is an excellent choice: it's durable, responds well to standard maintenance, and doesn't require the cautious handling that premium high-carbon blades often demand.
