How is the red finish applied to the blade, and will it fade?
Updated Mar 2026
The red finish on these wakizashi blades is achieved through a controlled lacquering and surface-treatment process applied over the manganese steel. Unlike a simple painted coating, the finish is layered to bond with the blade surface and resist light handling. That said, prolonged exposure to direct UV light or high humidity can gradually affect the vividness of any lacquered finish. To preserve the color over time, store the piece away from direct sunlight and in a low-humidity environment. A soft, dry cloth is sufficient for routine surface care - avoid abrasive materials that could scratch the finish.
