What are the best storage practices for a lacquered saya wakizashi?
Updated Mar 2026
Lacquered saya require slightly more care than plain wood scabbards. Store the wakizashi horizontally or on a display stand that does not place sustained pressure on any single point of the saya, which can cause finish cracking over time. Keep the storage environment between 40-60% relative humidity - too dry and the lacquer may crack; too damp and the wood beneath can swell. Apply a very light coat of blade-safe mineral oil to the steel periodically, but avoid letting oil seep into the saya opening, as it can soften the interior lining. A soft storage bag provides additional protection against dust and light contact scratches.
