How should I store a short katana for long-term display?
Updated Feb 2026
For long-term display, store your short katana horizontally on a padded rack with the edge facing upward — the traditional Japanese orientation that also reduces pressure on the ito wrapping. Keep the blade lightly coated with a thin layer of blade oil (choji oil is the traditional choice, though mineral oil works as a practical substitute) to prevent surface oxidation, particularly on high-carbon and Damascus steel blades, which are more reactive to humidity than stainless alternatives. Avoid display locations near windows with direct sunlight, as UV exposure can fade lacquer sayas and ito wrapping over time. In humid climates, silica gel packs placed near the display area help regulate moisture. Inspect the blade and fittings every few months, and re-oil the steel if the surface appears dry or shows early signs of patina.
