How should I maintain and display these replicas long-term?
Updated Feb 2026
Start by choosing a display location away from direct sunlight and high humidity, both of which accelerate oxidation and can fade lacquer finishes over time. Apply a thin layer of choji oil or food-grade mineral oil along the blade every four to six weeks using a soft microfiber cloth, wiping in one direction from spine to edge. Avoid touching the steel with bare fingers when possible, as skin oils contain salts that promote rust spots. For the lacquered saya, a dry dusting cloth is sufficient. Wall-mounted racks with padded rests are ideal because they distribute weight evenly and keep the blade suspended away from surfaces that could scratch the finish.
