How should I maintain a carbon steel anime collectible sword?

 Updated Feb 2026

Carbon steel requires modest but consistent care to stay in display-ready condition. After handling, wipe the blade down with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove any moisture or oils left by fingerprints — these are the primary cause of surface oxidation. Apply a thin coat of choji oil (traditional clove-based blade oil) or mineral oil every few months, or more frequently in humid climates. Store the sword horizontally when possible, with the edge facing upward if sheathed in the saya, to prevent moisture from pooling inside the scabbard. Avoid storing in sealed plastic cases without a desiccant, as trapped humidity accelerates rust. With minimal upkeep, a properly maintained carbon steel collectible will retain its finish and structural integrity for decades.
