How should I store and maintain a Sasuke Chokuto display piece?

 Updated Feb 2026

Carbon steel blades require consistent maintenance to prevent oxidation, even when displayed rather than handled regularly. Apply a thin coat of choji oil or mineral oil to the blade every two to three months, wiping it down gently with a soft, lint-free cloth. Store the blade in its saya when not on display, as the lacquered scabbard provides a protective microenvironment that slows moisture exposure. Avoid displaying in direct sunlight or near HVAC vents, as rapid humidity shifts can cause the wood saya to expand and contract unevenly. If displayed on a sword stand, horizontal mounting reduces stress on the habaki (blade collar) over long periods.
