How should I store a full tang anime sword long-term?

Storage environment matters more than most collectors initially expect. Carbon steel blades - regardless of grade - should be lightly coated with a thin layer of choji oil or a comparable mineral oil before storage. This creates a moisture barrier that prevents the fine surface oxidation that develops in display cases over months. Saya material also plays a role: rosewood and lacquered saya are more moisture-stable than raw hardwood, while leather-wrapped saya like those on the Michonne katana and certain Shin Gunto models can trap humidity if kept in sealed cases without ventilation. Horizontal display on a wall mount or a two-tier sword stand generally allows for better airflow than a closed cabinet. Avoid storing blades in their saya for extended periods without periodic inspection - even well-fitted saya can hold residual moisture against the blade.
