Is T10 clay-tempered steel worth choosing over Damascus for a display piece?

 Updated Mar 2026

They serve different visual priorities. T10 clay-tempered steel produces a genuine hamon - the temper line formed when clay applied to the spine during heat treatment creates a differential hardness zone. The resulting line is organic, irregular, and unique to each individual blade, giving T10 pieces an authenticity that pattern-welded steel cannot replicate by its nature. Damascus or folded steel, on the other hand, shows its character across the entire blade surface: flowing layered grain that catches light differently at every angle. Neither is strictly superior for display - it depends on whether you value a historically authentic differential temper line or a full-blade visual texture. Collectors building a serious display often find value in owning examples of both.
