How should I maintain the metal saya on a WWII military sword replica?
Updated Mar 2026
Metal saya - whether finished in olive iron or wrapped in brown leather - requires different care than the wooden saya found on traditional katana. For bare metal saya, wipe the exterior monthly with a soft dry microfiber cloth to remove fingerprint oils and ambient moisture. If the surface shows early signs of oxidation, a light application of Renaissance Wax or a comparable museum-grade metal preservative can protect the finish without altering its appearance. Leather-wrapped saya should be conditioned two to three times per year with a neutral leather conditioner, avoiding silicone-based products that can cause long-term softening of the leather grain. Always store the sword horizontally or at a slight downward angle toward the tip - this prevents any residual moisture inside the saya from pooling near the habaki (blade collar), which can cause localized corrosion on carbon steel blades over time.
