What steel types are used in dark blue handle wakizashi?

 Updated Mar 2026

This collection draws on four distinct steel types, each with different visual and structural characteristics. T10 tool steel is clay-tempered to produce a genuine hamon — the visible temper line along the blade edge — with a crisp, detailed transition zone. 1095 high carbon steel offers a similar hamon response and a slightly more flexible grain structure. Damascus steel is forge-welded from layered alloys, creating the flowing banded surface pattern prized in display collections. High manganese steel provides exceptional toughness and accepts a blue-tinted blade finish that pairs visually with the dark indigo koshirae. All blades in this collection are full-tang construction, with the steel running continuously through the handle for structural integrity expected in collector-grade pieces.
