Is spring steel a good choice for a long-term display collection?

 Updated Mar 2026

Spring steel - typically 9260 silicon-manganese alloy or 65Mn - is an excellent material for collectible katana intended for long-term display. Its silicon content gives it notably high elasticity, meaning the blade resists permanent deformation under stress far better than simpler high-carbon steels. For display purposes, this translates to a blade that holds its geometry reliably over time without warping on a horizontal stand. Spring steel also takes a clean polish and holds a well-defined edge profile. The main maintenance consideration is the same as any carbon steel: a light coat of mineral oil or dedicated sword oil applied to the blade every few months, especially in humid climates, will prevent surface oxidation. Stored in its saya with proper oil maintenance, a spring steel katana remains in excellent display condition for decades.
