What is T10 steel and why is it used for katana swords?
T10 is a high-carbon tool steel containing approximately 1% carbon along with tungsten and silicon alloys. These additions give T10 significantly higher hardness, heat resistance, and edge retention compared to standard carbon steels like 1045 or 1060. T10 is the preferred steel for collectible katanas because it responds exceptionally well to clay tempering — the traditional Japanese heat treatment process that creates a hard cutting edge, a flexible spine, and a visible real hamon line along the blade. The tungsten content also helps the blade maintain its temper during the intense heat-treatment process, producing more consistent and dramatic hamon patterns.
