What is T10 steel and why is it popular for Japanese swords?
T10 is a tungsten-alloy carbon steel with approximately 1% carbon content, plus added tungsten and silicon. These alloying elements give T10 exceptional hardness and edge retention while maintaining enough flexibility to resist breakage. T10 is particularly popular for Japanese swords because it responds well to traditional clay tempering — the process that creates the real hamon line (visible temper pattern) along the blade. This combination of performance properties and visual character makes T10 one of the most collected sword steels.
