How should I store and maintain a three-piece katana set?
Updated Mar 2026
Each blade should be lightly coated with a thin layer of mineral oil or traditional choji oil every two to three months to prevent oxidation on the high-carbon steel surface. Avoid touching the polished flat of the blade with bare hands - skin oils accelerate surface rust on uncoated steel. Store the set horizontally on a display stand in a low-humidity environment; persistent moisture above 60% relative humidity will cause patina development on both the steel and the lacquered saya. For long-term storage, wrapping each blade in a uchiko-treated rice paper sleeve before returning it to its saya provides an additional buffer against moisture. The saya itself should be inspected periodically for cracks, as a damaged saya can trap moisture directly against the blade.
