After any handling, apply a thin, even coat of choji oil or food-grade mineral oil along the full length of the blade using a soft cotton cloth. This prevents finger acid and ambient moisture from initiating surface oxidation. Store the piece on a horizontal sword stand or vertically in its saya with the edge facing upward, in a stable low-humidity environment away from direct sunlight. If you live in a coastal or seasonally humid region, placing silica gel packets near the storage area adds meaningful protection. Periodically remove the blade from the saya to check for moisture trapped between the blade and the wood, which can cause localized rust spots if left unaddressed.
