What is the difference between a longsword and a bastard sword?

 Updated Mar 2026

Both are medieval European swords with straight, double-edged blades and cruciform crossguards. The primary difference is grip length. A longsword has a full two-handed grip, while a bastard sword has a grip that falls between one-handed and two-handed — allowing the wielder to switch between grip styles depending on the situation. This versatility gave the bastard sword its name, as it belonged fully to neither the one-handed nor two-handed category.
