What is the difference between a katana and other Japanese swords?
Updated Feb 2026
The katana features a curved single-edged blade typically between 60 and 80 centimeters long, designed for two-handed use. It differs from the shorter wakizashi companion sword, the compact tanto dagger, the longer nodachi or odachi field swords, and the straight-bladed chokuto. Each sword type served a distinct role in Japanese tradition.
