What should I look for when choosing my first Japanese katana samurai sword?

 Updated Feb 2026

For a first katana, focus on three things: steel type, blade finish, and fittings quality. 1060 carbon steel offers the best balance of quality and price for beginners — it is tough, holds an edge well, and produces a clean-looking blade. Check that the sword is full-tang by confirming the blade extends through the handle with a bamboo mekugi pin. Look for tightly wound handle cord with no visible gaps, and a saya that fits the blade snugly without rattling. If a hamon temper line is important to you, step up to T10 or 1095 steel. For your first piece, choosing a traditional design over a themed replica will give you a more versatile foundation for future collecting.
