What is the significance of the Wado Ichimonji in One Piece lore?

 Updated Feb 2026

The Wado Ichimonji is Zoro's most emotionally significant sword in One Piece because of its origin and the promise it carries. The sword originally belonged to Zoro's childhood friend and rival Kuina, whose dream was to become the world's greatest swordsman. After Kuina's death, Zoro received the Wado Ichimonji from her father and took up the promise of carrying both their dreams - vowing to become the greatest swordsman in her place. Zoro holds the Wado Ichimonji in his mouth during his three-sword Santoryu style as a tribute to Kuina, placing his most meaningful blade where he can speak through it. This origin gives the white-bladed sword a narrative and emotional weight that makes it stand apart from his other swords as a collectible subject.
