What is T10 steel, and how does it relate to 1095?

 Updated Feb 2026

T10 is a Chinese tool steel standard that closely parallels 1095 in its high-carbon composition but includes trace amounts of vanadium, typically around 0.15–0.30%. Vanadium acts as a grain refiner during the hardening process, resulting in a tighter, more uniform microstructure throughout the blade. In practical terms for collectors, T10 blades tend to display a crisper, more clearly defined hamon after clay tempering and exhibit slightly better wear resistance along the edge. All katanas in this collection use T10 steel, making them among the most metallurgically refined options available in the 1095 family. The distinction matters most to collectors who examine their pieces closely or compare blades from different steel grades side by side.
