Frequently Asked Questions

What is a katana kake and how do these stands connect to that tradition?
Katana kake is the Japanese term for the traditional sword rack used to store and display katana in a Japanese household. Historically, the katana kake was a specific piece of furniture, often lacquered or carved, placed in the tokonoma or a prominent position in the reception room where a samurai would receive guests. The rack held the swords in the horizontal edge-up position, accessible and visible as an indicator of the household's identity and the owner's status. The quality of the katana kake, like the quality of the swords it held, was a statement of the owner's discernment. Modern Japanese katana stands continue this tradition in form and function: the horizontal display format, the black lacquer finish, and the edge-up orientation convention are all derived from the historical katana kake practice. The connection is not merely aesthetic - it reflects a genuine continuity between traditional Japanese sword display culture and contemporary collecting.
How do Japanese katana stands handle the curved profile of a katana saya?
The curved profile of a katana saya is accommodated by the round or rounded-top peg shape used on display stands. Because the saya is roughly cylindrical with a slight taper, it contacts the peg at the lower portion of the curve rather than resting flat. This contact geometry is stable: the curved saya sits in a stable position on a rounded peg and does not roll or shift under normal display conditions. The edge-up orientation reinforces this stability by keeping the heavier edge side of the saya facing upward, which lowers the center of gravity of the sword on the peg. The curve of the blade along the saya's length does not affect the stability of the display - the two peg support points are positioned to accommodate swords of varying curve radii within the standard katana range. A slightly more curved sword and a less curved sword both rest on the same pegs with equivalent stability.
Is there a specific placement in a room that works best for a Japanese katana stand?
Traditional Japanese interior design placed the sword display in the tokonoma - the formal alcove of a reception room - at a height and position that made the swords immediately visible to anyone entering the room. In modern homes without a tokonoma, the equivalent placement is typically a dedicated display shelf, a prominent table surface, or a wall area at or above eye level where the swords are the clear focal point rather than one item among many. The best placement for a Japanese katana stand balances visibility with the practical requirements of sword maintenance: the stand should be accessible enough to pick up the swords for examination and care without requiring furniture to be moved or awkward reaching. Avoid alcoves or corners where the sword length creates clearance issues, and avoid placement directly in the path of daily foot traffic where the stand is at risk of being bumped. A dedicated display shelf on an interior wall with stable temperature and humidity is the optimal combination of visibility, accessibility, and preservation conditions.
Does the number of tiers affect how a Japanese katana stand looks in a room?
Yes, the tier count meaningfully affects the visual presence of a Japanese katana stand in a room. A single-tier stand is minimal and focused - it presents one sword with maximum clarity and takes up the least visual space. It reads as a considered, selective display choice. A double-tier stand has more physical presence and creates a vertical composition between the two swords that a single-tier stand cannot. It suits a collector who wants the display to have some volume and weight in the room without being overwhelming. A three-tier stand is a significant room element - three swords displayed vertically at stepped heights create a composition that reads as a collection rather than an individual piece, and the stand itself has an architectural quality that commands attention from across the room. Choosing the right tier count involves matching the stand's visual weight to the room's scale and the surrounding furnishings. A large room with high ceilings and substantial furniture can accommodate a three-tier stand as a natural element; a smaller room or a more minimal setting may be better served by a single or double-tier stand.

Two very elegant sword stands - photo shows the double but the single is also excellent. Both pieces are simply constructed of very pleasing wood, assembly was easy and took only a minute or two. I am very happy with both these pieces and would recommend them. They may have been designed for katana, but I use them exclusively for Chinese dao and jian swords, and they are perfect for these.

The stand looked great. It was sturdy. However, it was a bit hard to assemble. The grooves in the wood were not cut properly. I ended up having to sand the grooves by hand in order to fit the pieces into the grooves.
