How should I maintain and store a shirasaya katana for display?
Updated Feb 2026
Because shirasaya mountings use natural hardwood without lacquer on the tsuka, moisture control is essential. Store or display the sword in a climate-controlled room with stable humidity between 40–60%. Apply a thin coat of choji oil (clove oil) to the blade every four to six weeks, or more frequently in humid environments, using a soft flannel cloth to spread an even film that prevents surface oxidation. Avoid touching the blade with bare fingers, as skin oils accelerate tarnishing. For the wooden saya and handle, an occasional wipe with a dry microfiber cloth keeps dust from settling into the grain. If displaying horizontally on a rack, position the edge facing upward in the traditional manner, which also minimizes contact between the cutting edge and the inside of the scabbard.
