How should I oil and store a 1095 spring steel katana for long-term display?
Updated Feb 2026
Apply a thin, even coat of choji oil or food-grade mineral oil to the entire blade surface using a soft, lint-free flannel cloth. Avoid silicone-based sprays, as they can leave residue that traps moisture. Oil the blade after every handling session and perform a full maintenance pass every four to six weeks if the sword is on open display. For storage, place the katana horizontally on a wooden or lacquered stand with the cutting edge facing upward to prevent the edge from resting against the saya's interior. Keep the room temperature stable between 65°F and 75°F with humidity below 60 percent. If you live in a coastal or humid climate, consider adding a silica gel packet inside the saya to absorb excess moisture and prevent oxidation.
