How should I store and maintain a hand forged katana on display?
Updated Feb 2026
High-carbon steel, including T10, will oxidize if left unprotected. For display storage, apply a light coat of choji oil or a dedicated sword preservation oil to the blade every one to three months, depending on your local humidity levels. Use a soft, lint-free cloth or a traditional nuguigami paper to wipe the blade before re-oiling, removing any fingerprints that can accelerate surface oxidation. Store the katana horizontally in its saya on a sword stand, edge facing upward in the traditional Japanese style, in a stable environment away from direct sunlight and significant humidity fluctuations. Avoid synthetic materials in contact with the blade surface.
