How should I maintain and store a chokuto collectible?
Updated Mar 2026
Proper care for a chokuto collectible focuses on three areas: blade surface protection, hardware preservation, and storage environment. For the blade, apply a thin, even coat of choji oil (traditional Japanese blade oil) or a neutral mineral oil every two to three months to prevent surface oxidation, particularly on high-carbon steel blades. Wipe away any fingerprints after handling, as skin oils can accelerate surface discoloration. The tsuba and other metal fittings can be lightly wiped with a dry microfiber cloth. For storage, keep the sword in a low-humidity environment - ideally below 60% relative humidity - and avoid direct sunlight exposure, which can fade lacquered saya finishes over time. Horizontal storage on a padded stand distributes weight evenly and avoids stress on the saya.
