How should I maintain a natural wood sword stand over time?
Updated Mar 2026
Natural wood stands benefit from occasional light conditioning with a furniture-grade beeswax or carnauba wax polish applied with a soft cloth, which preserves the surface without obscuring the grain. Avoid placing the stand in direct sunlight for extended periods, as UV exposure will gradually bleach the wood tone and may cause slight warping along thinner carved sections. Humidity is the more serious concern: store the stand in a space maintained between 40–60% relative humidity. Environments that are too dry cause cracking along carved relief areas; environments that are too damp risk mold forming between the cradle and saya contact points. A basic room hygrometer is an inexpensive addition to any serious display space.
