How should I store a carbon steel display sword to prevent rust?
Updated Mar 2026
Carbon steel blades like those made from 1045 steel require proactive maintenance because they lack the chromium content that gives stainless steel its corrosion resistance. For long-term display, apply a thin, even coat of choji oil or food-grade mineral oil along the entire blade surface every two to three months. Store the sword on a horizontal wall mount or a dedicated katana stand in a room with stable, moderate humidity - ideally between 40% and 55% relative humidity. Avoid storing the blade inside the saya for extended periods without periodic airing, since trapped moisture accelerates oxidation. If you live in a coastal or particularly humid environment, consider adding silica gel packets near the display area to manage ambient moisture levels.
