How should I store and maintain a white-finished sword?
Updated Mar 2026
White blades and lacquered white saya require slightly more attentive care than darker-finished pieces because surface oxidation or fingerprint oils are more visible against the pale finish. For the blade, apply a light coat of choji oil (or a neutral mineral oil) every two to three months using a soft cloth, working from the base toward the tip. Avoid touching the polished surface with bare hands. The white lacquered saya should be stored away from direct sunlight, which can cause lacquer to yellow or crack over time. Store the sword horizontally on a display rack or in a sword bag in a low-humidity environment, ideally between 40–60% relative humidity, to prevent any moisture-related issues with both the steel and the saya.
