How should I care for a high-carbon steel display blade?

 Updated Mar 2026

High-carbon steel blades - including 1045, 1060, and 1065 variants - are susceptible to surface oxidation if left untreated, particularly in humid environments. Apply a thin coat of choji oil or food-grade mineral oil every two to three months using a soft cotton cloth, wiping from the base of the blade toward the tip in a single direction. Store the sword horizontally on a display stand rather than vertically, which reduces stress on the tang and prevents saya warp over time. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight to preserve both the blade's finish treatment and the lacquer or paint on the scabbard. Avoid touching the blade surface directly - the oils from skin contact can accelerate spotting on polished steel.
