How should I oil and maintain a spring steel katana blade?

 Updated Mar 2026

Even though 9260 spring steel is more corrosion-resistant than plain high-carbon steel grades, bare blades still benefit from periodic oiling. Apply a thin, even coat of choji oil or odorless mineral oil using a soft, lint-free cloth every two to three months under normal display conditions - or after any handling where the blade was touched directly. Before oiling, wipe the existing surface clean with a dry cotton cloth to remove dust and residue. Avoid silicone-based sprays, which can leave a residue that is difficult to remove and may interact poorly with some lacquer finishes on the saya. Store the blade sheathed in its saya only after the oil has been allowed to set for a few minutes and any excess has been wiped away.
