How does T10 clay-tempered steel differ from Damascus in these swords?

 Updated Mar 2026

T10 is a high-carbon tool steel known for its wear resistance and ability to hold a fine edge. The clay-tempering process - applying a thicker layer of refractory clay to the spine before quenching - creates a differential hardness between edge and spine, producing the hamon temper line that many collectors prize as a marker of authentic craft. Damascus steel, by contrast, is produced by forge-welding two or more alloys and manipulating them through repeated folding, resulting in the visible grain or 'flow' pattern across the blade surface. T10 clay-tempered pieces tend to appeal to collectors interested in traditional Japanese metallurgical technique; Damascus pieces attract those drawn to the visual drama of a patterned blade.
