How do I maintain a carbon steel display sword to prevent rust?

 Updated Mar 2026

Carbon steel requires periodic maintenance to prevent surface oxidation, particularly in humid environments. A light coat of choji oil or food-grade mineral oil applied with a soft cloth every two to three months is generally sufficient for display pieces that aren't handled frequently. Before oiling, wipe the blade down with a clean cloth to remove any fingerprints - skin oils accelerate rust formation on bare carbon steel. Store the swords in a low-humidity environment, and avoid display cases that trap moisture. With routine care, a carbon steel collector piece can maintain its finish for many years.
