How should I maintain a hardwood sword stand over time?

 Updated Mar 2026

Solid hardwood is naturally resilient but benefits from basic environmental management. Keep stands away from direct sunlight for extended periods, as UV exposure can fade lacquered finishes and cause surface checking in the wood grain over time. In dry climates or heavily air-conditioned spaces, occasional application of a light furniture wax or natural wood conditioner on unfinished surfaces will prevent the wood from becoming brittle. Dust the stand regularly with a dry or very lightly dampened cloth rather than wet cleaning, and avoid placing it in rooms with high humidity fluctuations, which can cause wood to expand and contract. Lacquered stands require no conditioning but should be wiped clean promptly if sword oil or polishing compounds make contact with the surface.
