How should I store a cyan handle katana to preserve its color?
Updated Mar 2026
Color preservation on a cyan handle katana requires attention to both the ito wrapping and the lacquered saya. The greatest risks are prolonged UV exposure and humidity. Direct sunlight will fade silk or cotton ito wrapping over time and can cause lacquered wood saya to crack or dull. Store the sword away from windows or use UV-filtering display cases if sunlight is unavoidable. For the blade, apply a thin coat of choji oil or food-grade mineral oil every two to three months to prevent oxidation. The ito itself should be kept dry - avoid storing in basements or unconditioned spaces with high humidity, as moisture loosens the wrapping and promotes discoloration. A horizontal katana stand with the blade edge facing upward is the recommended resting position for long-term display.
