How should I care for the blue blade finish on these swords?

 Updated Mar 2026

The blue lightning blade finish is a surface treatment applied after forging, and it benefits from the same protective routine used for any collectible blade. Apply a thin, even coat of camellia oil or a neutral mineral oil every two to three months using a soft cloth or rice paper. This creates a barrier against ambient humidity, which is the primary threat to the finish over time. Avoid storing the sword in its saya for extended periods without occasional airing — moisture can accumulate inside lacquered scabbards. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, as UV exposure will gradually dull both the blade finish and any colored cord wraps on the tsuka. With consistent light maintenance, the vivid surface treatment will remain visually sharp for years.
