How should I care for and store a 1090 carbon steel katana?
Updated Mar 2026
Carbon steel, including 1090, is susceptible to surface oxidation if left unprotected. The standard maintenance routine involves applying a thin, even coat of choji oil - a light mineral oil traditionally used in Japanese sword care - to the blade every few months, or more frequently in humid environments. Before applying fresh oil, remove the old coat using a soft cotton cloth or traditional uchiko powder ball. Store the katana horizontally in its saya (scabbard) with the edge facing upward, as this is the traditional resting position that reduces stress on the habaki (blade collar) and helps preserve the saya's interior fit. Avoid storage in areas with significant humidity swings, and never leave the blade in contact with leather for extended periods, as leather can trap moisture against the steel.
