Lacquered saya require modest but consistent care to maintain their finish. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which gradually fades and yellows red lacquer regardless of quality. Store the saya in a stable environment - sudden changes in humidity cause the underlying hardwood to swell or contract, which can eventually crack or lift the lacquer surface. Wipe the exterior with a soft, dry cloth to remove fingerprints and dust. Never use alcohol-based cleaners or silicone polishes, as both can dull or dissolve lacquer coatings. Piano lacquer saya in particular benefit from occasional buffing with a microfiber cloth to preserve their high-gloss depth. The habaki mouth of the saya should remain clean and free of oil that migrates from the blade.
