What is the best way to store and maintain a flame blade katana for display?
Updated Mar 2026
Proper storage significantly extends the visual life of a display katana. Keep the blade lightly coated with a thin layer of non-acidic mineral oil or dedicated sword oil — this prevents surface oxidation, particularly on high-carbon steels like T10 and 1095, which are more susceptible to moisture than stainless alternatives. Store the katana horizontally on a wall mount or sword stand, edge facing upward in the traditional Japanese orientation, in a low-humidity environment away from direct sunlight. UV exposure can fade lacquer finishes on sayas and cause handle wrappings to dry out over time. If the piece is stored in its saya for extended periods, check periodically that moisture has not become trapped inside the scabbard. A light wipe with a clean microfiber cloth before re-sheathing removes any fingerprint oils that could lead to spotting on the blade surface.
