What is the difference between a tokkuri and an ochoko?
Updated Mar 2026
A tokkuri is the flask-shaped bottle used to hold and serve sake - its narrow neck is designed to control pouring flow and, in traditional settings, to allow the vessel to be gently warmed in hot water before serving. An ochoko is the small, open-mouthed cup used for drinking. The compact size of the ochoko (typically holding just 30-60ml) is not a limitation but a cultural design choice: frequent small refills allow the host to actively tend to guests, which is a meaningful gesture in Japanese hospitality. In a matched set, the tokkuri and ochoko share the same glaze treatment and clay body, creating visual harmony when displayed together on the bamboo tray.
