What is the difference between a jian and a dao?

 Updated Mar 2026

The jian is a straight, double-edged sword — known in Chinese tradition as the "Gentleman of Weapons" — designed for precision thrusting and cutting. The dao is a single-edged saber — called the "General of Weapons" — designed for powerful sweeping cuts. The jian is associated with scholars and refined martial skill, while the dao became the dominant military sidearm across most of Chinese history. Both are fundamental to Chinese sword culture.
