How long is an odachi compared to a standard katana?
Updated Feb 2026
A standard katana has a blade length of roughly 60-73 cm (24-29 inches). An odachi blade typically exceeds 90 cm (35 inches), with some reaching over 100 cm. The overall length including handle and scabbard can reach 150 cm (59 inches) or more. This significant size difference makes the odachi one of the most visually imposing Japanese sword types, and the reason it was historically carried on the back rather than at the waist.
