What is the difference between a dao and a katana?
Updated Feb 2026
Both are curved, single-edged swords, but they come from different traditions and have distinct design features. The katana has a longer, more gradually curved blade with a circular or ornate guard (tsuba) and a two-handed grip. The dao typically has a shorter, more broadly curved blade with a disc-shaped guard and can be used single-handed. The katana's handle wrapping uses ray-skin and silk cord, while dao handles use wrapped wood or leather. Their cutting philosophies also differ: the katana emphasizes drawing cuts, while the dao focuses on direct chopping power.
