How can I tell a handmade katana from a machine-made one?
Updated Feb 2026
Handmade katanas display natural variation in the hamon line, blade geometry, and surface finish. Machine-made swords show uniform, repetitive patterns. Handmade blades may have subtle hammer marks visible under the polish, and the tang will show hand-filing marks. Each handmade katana also has slightly different dimensions, reflecting the individual forging process.
