Why are Chinese-made katana often more affordable than Japanese-tradition equivalents?
Updated Feb 2026
The pricing difference reflects economic factors rather than quality differences. Chinese swordsmiths operate within a production infrastructure where labor costs, workshop overhead, and material sourcing are priced according to the regional economy. This allows them to deliver hand-forged, premium-steel katana at price points that would not be viable in Japan or Western countries with higher operating costs. The forging process itself requires the same skill, time, and physical effort regardless of where the smith works. Many collectors recognize this economic reality and take advantage of the value proposition to acquire premium-steel pieces that would cost significantly more if produced elsewhere.
